Finnish Churches for Justice and Peace
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last— and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
This is my command: Love each other.
(John 15: 16-17, NIV)
Finnish Churches for Justice and Peace, also known as the Ecumenical Week of Responsibility, is a campaign on international Christian responsibility. It is led by all the churches and by many Christian organizations in Finland and is coordinated by the Finnish Ecumenical Council. Approximately one fifth of Finnish citizens, most of whom are members of Christian communities, are reached annually by the campaign.
The focus of the campaign is to work together as Christians for a righteous world in a way determined by our faith and described in the Bible. During its past history the campaign has challenged its audience to face issues such as children’s rights, human trafficking, economical exploitation, peace and environmental deprivation.
The aim of campaigning is to promote a style of living where God is given the central role along with the command to love our neighbors. Christian life in its essence endeavors to achieve justice for the wellbeing of the whole creation; in the language of international responsibility this means working for human rights, sustainable
development, peace and reconciliation.
Campaigning takes place year around, but culminates in October when an international specialist visits Finland to highlight the theme of the year. Concurrently, UN day and the National Day of Prayer for Peace, Human Rights and International Responsibility are celebrated. The annual Prayer Day Declaration includes aspects of the campaign theme and is signed by the President of the Republic of Finland. Finnish Churches for Justice and Peace has received financial support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Finland.
